Fix a rattling parking brake cable bracket

If you’re hearing a rattle from the back seat, around the rear armrest or first aid kid area, there’s a chance it’s coming from your parking brake cable bracket.

The parking brake cable runs under the car and is held against the chassis by a metal bracket (16) - the bracket attaches to the chassis with rubber grommets (18).

Over time, the rubber grommets disintegrate and you’re left with the metal bracket banging against the chassis. That will cause the rattling you hear in the cabin.

This bracket is attached to the chassis near the back of the driveshaft by the heatshield. Below, you can see that one of my grommets has worn out - that’s enough to cause the rattling.

The bracket pulls out of the chassis pretty easily - getting it back in with new grommets is a pain. The trick I’ve found: warm up the rubber grommets with a hair dryer, then put a little bit of silicone lubricant on the chassis and grommet to help it fit in. Don’t use a sharp tool to push the grommet in, or you’ll destroy the grommet - it’s brittle rubber. Work the lip in slowly.

Put the grommets in the chassis first, then work the bracket into both grommets - don’t put the grommets on the bracket first, you’ll make your life difficult.

To put the bracket through the grommets, you probably want to scrape the corrosion off the bracket with a PB Blaster and a wire brush - then a little silicone lube on the tip of the bracket will help it work through the grommet.

A pain, but you’ll have a quiet cabin!
